Method: sum of the published value of every award in our data set for each company, converted to US dollars, all years. Values of indefinite delivery contracts are ceilings, so totals overstate what was spent. Sources are USAspending.gov, the DoD contract announcements, TED award notices and UK Contracts Finder. Subsidiaries are shown as their own companies where the award names them that way.
Award value and revenue are different rankings
Our ranking reflects contract awards in public data, which are dominated by the US Department of Defense because it publishes the most complete award data in the world. Rankings by defence revenue, such as the SIPRI Top 100 arms-producing and military services companies, use company reports and also count export sales and work for foreign governments.
Both views agree on the leaders. Lockheed Martin, RTX (Raytheon), Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics and Boeing are at the top of every list, followed by European groups such as BAE Systems, Airbus, Leonardo, Thales and Rheinmetall, and by large Chinese state groups in the revenue rankings.
